Chapter 9
I woke to a very distinct smell. It was a great scent, thank goodness. One of expensive shower gel and spicy fresh toothpaste. I opened my eyelids very slowly, one peek at a time. The beautiful human specimen before me perched on the edge of my couch, staring at my face with an expression that represented confusion, possibly lust, or maybe indifference. It was really hard to tell with Anthony.
“Hey,” I said. “How’d you get in?”
“I see you’re all moved in.” He looked around, and it took me a second to realize he was being sarcastic.
“Oh, ha. Yeah. It was a stupid mistake to only ask the guys to load up the truck. I totally forgot about the unloading part. Meg and I barely got this couch through the doorway before we crashed. I think she found some floor space in the bedroom.”
“Judging by the sound of it, I’d say she’s still out.” Anthony cocked his head, and I noticed the chainsaw-like noises coming from beyond the hallway.
“Yeah,” I said. “She’s pretty pooped. She ate an entire DQ cake on the way here.”
“I saw two cake boxes outside. Did you have Nicole’s or Tommy’s?” Anthony stood up and faced the blank wall.
I pushed myself into a sitting position. “Hey, not fair. You’re creeping through my garbage and breaking into my apartment – and you’re making me feel guilty?”
Anthony turned partially towards me, enough for me to see a sideways smirk bend his lips.
“Can you teach me how to do that?” I propped myself into a sitting position, my feet folded underneath my butt. My mind was hazy with sleep and my eyesight still a little bit blurry, but I focused as best I could.
“Doll.” Anthony reached for me, his arm sliding behind my neck as his fingers pulled me towards him. “I can teach you whatever you want.”
I shivered, and it had nothing to do with the vast amounts of ice cream I’d devoured.
Anthony still had his eyes fixed on my chest, and I glanced longingly at the bedroom where, instead of a private haven filled with a fluffy bed and crisp white sheets, there was yellow shag carpet and a woman snoring louder than a construction crew.
“Wanna help me carry stuff in?” I asked.
Anthony’s gaze snapped up to my face and he gave me such a patronizing expression I couldn’t quite decipher the meaning behind it. Was he offended I’d asked the head of security to help me unload a few boxes full of picture frames and glassware? Or did he just really want to keep staring down my shirt, and was frustrated I’d put an end to it? There was no saying it wasn’t both.
“I stopped by to see how things went with Kim today.” Anthony’s business face was on again, his demeanor professional and chilly at best.
“Oh, fudge.” I jumped up. “I totally forgot. Meg kind of used a lock picking set from an evidence locker to get us in here. Mr. Kim wasn’t around when we knocked on his door, and we couldn’t just leave the couch in the hallway.
